100 MOST POPULAR COLORS
100 Most Popular Colors  is a series of 100 drawings, each done on the identical color chart. The color charts are from Cook and Dunn (now out of business) and are titled 100 Most Popular Colors.

My work, 100 Most Popular Colors, became an extended interactive visual conversation between a given image and my additions and subtractions, a kind of call and response. These discussions are formal, narrative, and humorous, 100 characters in an epic novel.

I imposed two fundamental rules at the start of this project. The first was that when a drawing was completed I signed, dated, and numbered it, making its sequence unchangeable, situating each work in a fixed temporal relationship with the others. My second rule was that a drawing, if it was not going well, could be torn up and discarded, but only if it was not already signed and dated. I did not allow any editing after the fact. In that sense, the series is like a diary or record of its own development.

As the drawings progressed, the ideas sometimes came very smoothly, one out of the other. Some were affected by an experience of the moment; others came as a revelation.

These drawings were done in a year and a half period from 1993 to 1994, and have never been shown before.
